Winning Takes Balls! – A recap of Lotto Night and Look Ahead to the #2 Pick

It was a wonderful evening for Bucks fans last night as the team secured the #2 pick in the upcoming draft. While we all would have liked the team to secure the top pick, remember that the alternatives were drafting #3 or #4. With the second pick the Bucks have a number of great options to explore between now and the NBA Draft on June 26th.

Top Six Reasons Why This Was a Great Night:

The Next Chapter Begins……

It has been 48-hours since the sale of the Bucks was announced. We wanted to wait before posting our thoughts, to allow some time to absorb the details. Our reaction to the news is extremely positive and we are optimistic about the team’s long-term future in the City.  Let’s now talk specifics: Continue reading

About Those Hedge Fund Managers……

We haven’t published two pieces in one day, but given the news broken by Bill Simmons that hedge fund managers Marc Lasry and Wes Edens are the front-runners to purchase the team, we felt there needed to be a bit more commentary on the subject.

In our earlier piece, we provided some background on Lasry and Edens for those unfamiliar with them.  We encourage everyone to read that article first, as it will help provide context for this companion discussion. In this piece, we’d like to sound a note of caution for Bucks fans that the long-term future of the franchise could still be fragile if Senator Kohl goes forward with a sale to Lasry and Edens. Some Big News Dropped Yesterday….

Editors Note: After this piece was published, we followed up with a companion piece that talks in more detail about how the Bucks themselves make an attractive hedge fund target in a sense, and some of the potential risks of selling to Lasry and Edens.

Most of you following the Bucks on social media received the news regarding the names of the front-runners to purchase the Bucks, as reported by Bill Simmons in his weekly “Mailbag” column over at Grantland. That said, we aren’t sure this giant tree falling in the forest made an impact locally, so we’re here to offer some thoughts on it.

A week ago this time, Simmons set Bucks Nation ablaze with his report that the Bucks were very close to being sold, for a price in the $525 million dollar range. That lead off a speculative frenzy as to who the potential buyers might be. We thought Rich Kirchen of The Business Journal might have nailed it with his profile of Chicagoan Dr. Richard Chaifetz, a self made millionaire who has in the past few years been linked to groups trying to purchase the Minnesota Timberwolves and St. Louis Rams.  Not the case, as Simmons followed up yesterday with his reporting that:

The guys who thought they had it as recently as two days ago? Hedge-fund billionaires Marc Lasry and Wes Edens, who slid under the radar this entire time and thought they landed the Bucks with an offer in the $550 million range (slightly more than Vivek Ranadivé paid for the equally unappealing Kings). As recently as Wednesday, Lasry and Edens were expecting the NBA to vote on their bid at next week’s Board of Governors meeting.

So … what happened? Continue reading

Grantland : In Giannis We Trust

Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee Bucks

A superb piece from Grantland’s Amos Barshad went up today, if you haven’t yet read it you should.  Barshad muses on all things Milwaukee Bucks but in particular on the focus and pressure being put on sublimely talented Bucks youngster Giannis Antetokounmpo and how important his development is to the Bucks future, as well as chronicling his inspiring past.

The piece also focusses on Senator Kohl’s tenure and gives SaveOurBucks.com a couple of solid shoutouts.  Barshad met with Save Our Bucks own Paul Henning while in Milwaukee for the story recently and the two had a great chat, some of which is detailed in the article.

What Is The Strategic Plan?

SaveOurBucks.com has been online now for just over a month. In that time we’ve been fortunate to have coverage from Kelly Dwyer (Yahoo), Bill Simmons (ESPN/Grantland), Matt Moore (CBS), USA Today, Deadspin, The Sporting News, Darren Rovell, The Dan Patrick Show, Fox 6, WTMJ 4, WISN 12 and CBS 58 among others. However, it wasn’t until  the other day that we received coverage from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (MJS), the local newspaper of record here in Milwaukee.

You can read the article by Don Walker here. We think the article was well-written and conveys our “tough love” approach as it relates to the organization. There is one point to clarify though. In the article, Walker refers to “a mystery man funding the operation…” There really isn’t a “funder” here for operations, as the costs of creating a website are minimal, and are graciously being donated by our talented webmaster. What are the goals of SaveOurBucks.com?

We were recently asked on Twitter by Bucks play-by-play man, Ted Davis (@Nbated), “What are the goals of SaveOurBucks.com?”

Long-term, we’d hope this site can be an information source and rallying point for fans, as the Milwaukee community debates the merits of a new arena. In the short-term however, our goals are to spark discussion and accountability regarding the franchise’s efforts in producing a compelling product for the fans to rally around. If the Bucks are able to present to the public an exciting team, we believe the fans will return. However, to get to that point Senator Kohl needs to rethink how he has structured his front office and the culture therein.

As we’ve documented here, the front office culture the past twenty years may be contributing to the challenges the team faces. The front office has a number of Executive Vice Presidents who have been with the team for decades. All of these people provide input on basketball related decisions, even though many are not basketball people, but rather attorneys and accountants.  Here are some examples of their dysfunctional involvement in basketball decisions, as documented by BrewHoop. Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) tells Jalen Rose (@JalenRose) about saveourbucks.com

Bill Simmons has been talking about saveourbucks.com again, this time telling Jalen Rose about us in his latest Grantland video series, Part 3 of their 33 Day NBA recap.  It’s only a brief snippet but it warmed our hearts too, Bill.

If your browser doesn’t automatically do it for you skip to 23:56 to hear about saveourbucks.com but the entire thing is worth a watch if you have the time.

Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) has his say on #SaveOurBucks over at Grantland

@BillSimmons has mentioned saveourbucks.com in his most recent article on grantland.com saying in part :

“For Milwaukee, when you’re forced to launch SaveOurBucks.com just to (a) make it clear that fans still love the team, (b) prove that all the losing isn’t the “small market’s” fault (when it’s really bad management), and (c) proactively protect yourselves against the possibility of a franchise relocation, you know you’ve hit rock bottom.”

It’s a very interesting read about how unbelievably bad the Eastern Conference is this year and the teams in line to pick at the top of next years loaded draft.  Read the full article here.
